>> Go Abroad Fair

The University of the West Indies was showcased at the GO ABROAD FAIR
2006 which was held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, on
Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17.
The International Programmes Division Team led by Lilieth Nelson, was
delighted that over 500 persons visited and expressed interest in the
UWI.
The Go Abroad Fair is a trade show style event that is free to the
public. Exhibitors at the fair showcased opportunities for Canadian
youth to take on the world through study, youth exchange, work and
travel options, volunteer opportunities, cultural and language
programmes, and overseas adventure travel...More
>> NY Chapter Spearheads Best Practices for all Alumni Chapters
When UWIAA Chapter Presidents met at the annual UWI CEC meeting held at
Mona in April, New York Chapter President Dr. Hazel Carter presented a
blue print document outlining best practices for UWIAA Chapters. Other
Chapters have since been working with the New York Chapter to develop
these guidelines, which outline strategies to strengthen Chapters,
ensure financial transparency, build NY Chapter Spearheads Best
Practices for all Alumni Chapters membership and create collaboration
between Chapters and community groups...More
>> Student Receives Toronto Chapter Scholarship
Tamika Spencer received a scholarship worth CAN $1,000 presented by the
Toronto Chapter of UWIAA at the annual Ceremony for the Presentation of
Student Awards - Rewarding Excellence, held on April 4, 2006 at Cave
Hill Campus. Tamika will be going into her final year in the Faculty of
Law in September. “This award inspires me to continue to work hard at
what I really love. It goes to show that dedication and determination
are the key ingredients in one’s successful achievement. I would like to
take this opportunity to thank the UWIAA (Toronto Chapter) for
considering and giving me such an opportunity to continue my career
thrust,” Tamika stated.

A second year Management Studies student from The University of the West
Indies (UWI) - Ms. Yolande Hylton - visited the United Kingdom (UK) this
summer as a guest of the UWIAA UK Chapter. 
"This is the first time such a sponsorship happened" the UWI UK Alumni
President Vernon Barrett stated, "and we hope it brings the alumni body
and the student body closer together in a very practical way". The
initiative was a brainwave of the President who saw the need to provide
UWI students in the Caribbean with a more global exposure while they
were still students and better prepare them for the wider working world
and alumni life after graduation. In this initiative - called the Alumni
Apprentice Programme (AAP) - the successful student is flown over to the
UK for the summer period on an "all expenses paid" trip. He or she is
housed in London, mentored by UWI alumni, shown around the UK's "sights
and sounds" and exposed to the UK working life....... More

Dr. John Ewen has made plastics more durable, heat-proof, tear
resistant and transparent for use in many products including
golf balls, food wraps, and automotive parts. One of his
plastics allows oxygen to pass through, to keep salads and
vegetables crisp without refrigeration.
Plastics are a multi-billion dollar industry worldwide. Dr. Ewen
studied metallocenes as catalysts to allow plastics to be made
with greater strength and flexibility. For his groundbreaking
research on plastics, he received the prestigious National Medal
of Technology from the President of the United States in 2002.
Dr. Ewen credits his success to, “a love for chemistry, a love
for doing research and all credit to the metallocenes.”..More

Deborah-Ann Lee is not only the Resident Tutor and Head of the School of Continuing Studies and Distance Education (Cayman Islands) for The University of the West Indies, she is also the Acting President of the UWIAA. She has been working with the Hon. Anthony Smellie, who is a Past President and founding member
of the local Chapter and other graduates to really reestablish alumni activities.
She says, “When I look at the role that our UWI graduates play in Cayman, I am PROUD to say that I too am a product of UWI”.
