Gender Based Violence

The project on Gender Based Violence having successfully completed a bibliography of research on gender based violence in Jamaica, continued phase one of the project during a workshop exercise held in October at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston, Jamaica.

During this workshop a documentary review of the items in the bibliography was presented by Ms. Althea Perkins of the CGDS. This exercise was used to identify the extent to which the literature in the bibliography focused on ‘root causes’ of gender based violence in Jamaica and provided the stratagem for the next stage. Her findings were used by participants to prepare for the next phase of the project, that of data collection, which will seek to:

  • Determine how socialisation contributes to the acquisition of violence and aggressive behaviours and the impact of social and economic factors in this regard;
  • Analyse the male-female expressions of violence as they are affected by group dynamics; and
  • Review secondary data from case studies.

Participants in the project, headed by Althea Perkins are presently working on the research instruments and refining the research design for the data collection and analysis phases to be conducted in 2005.

We will keep you posted on their progress!!
