Homework Centre
Initiated by the University Women’s Group, the Homework Centre provides after-school supervision and homework assistance for children of members of staff and students at the UWI. It operates Mondays to Fridays 1:00 to 5 pm for children aged 4 to 12 years.
Women in Microenterprise
This project was undertaken as part of a larger inter-agency project on microenterprise in Jamaica. Two major components of the project were:
- Training of approximately 120 women across Jamaica to equip them with skills needed to start-up and operate a successful microenterprise; and
- Hosting of a policy roundtable meeting.
Gender Analysis in Policy and Planning
Training was delivered to policy analysts in line ministries, the Office of the Prime Minister and to Permanent Secretaries. A training manual was also developed.
Caribbean Feminist Activism
Members of staff of the Centre for Gender and Development Studies have provided leadership, technical assistance and expertise at national, regional and international meetings and conferences. These include the preparatory meetings for both the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing in 1995 and the Beijing +5 conference held in New York in 1995 and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
Public lectures/seminars
Regular panel discussions and presentations by local and overseas scholars are facilitated by the Unit. These seminars serve a public education function, and provide a gender perspective on topical issues.
