The Regional Coordinating Unit of the Centre for Gender and Development Studies offers both undergraduate and graduate level courses in Gender & Development Studies. No first degree programme major is offered in Gender Studies but course offerings are available to students in different faculties desirous of pursuing a Minor in Gender & Development Studies through the Centre for Gender & Development Studies. Linnette Vassell
Social Development Consultant

Linnette Vassell holds a B.A. and M. Phil. in History from the University of the West Indies. She is a consultant on Gender and Development and works as part time instructor in the Graduate Programme as well as the Certificate Programme in Gender & Development Studies at the UWI. In the Certificate Programme she acts as facilitator for the course: Women Organizing and the Development of the Women’s Movement in the Caribbean .

June Ann Castello
Lecturer, Centre for Gender and Development Studies

June Ann Castello, a trained teacher, has a B.A in English/Linguistics as well as a M.Sc. in Gender and Development Studies. She has worked in education for many years both as a teacher and as an administrator. She is currently employed as a Lecturer in the UWI’s Mona Unit of the CGDS, teaching courses in Gender and Caribbean Culture, Men and Masculinities in the Caribbean and (at the Graduate Level) Sex, Gender & the Family. Her research interest is Gender and Religion. During the inception of the Certificate Programme in Gender & Development Studies offered by the Regional Coordinating Unit she taught one of the courses offered. She now acts as a consultant and second examiner for courses in the Certificate Programme in Gender & Development Studies.

Suzanne Charles
Instructor

Suzanne Charles, who holds a B.Sc. Degree as well as the Dip IR and M.Sc., is currently attached to the Regional Coordinating Unit, UWI, as a Research Assistant. She teaches two of the eight courses offered in the Certificate Programme in Gender & Development Studies, and acts as Adviser to students doing their 6-month Research Project [ GEND 100 ; GEND 2103 ; GEND 1004 ]. Her research interests include the feminist agenda in International Relations, Caribbean (homo) sexuality, the creation of an authentic Caribbean self identity and child rearing practices.

Althea Perkins
Instructor

Althea Perkins is currently the Research Assistant in CGDS, Mona Unit. She also conducts tutorials with undergraduate students in Gender & Development courses on campus as well as teach in the Distance Certificate Programme. As one of the first instructors in the Distance Programme she taught several of the courses. She presently teaches GEND 2003 , GEND 1201 and GEND 1105 and serves as a Research Advisor for students conducting their 6-month Research Project.

Danielle Toppin
Instructor

Danielle Toppin is a part time instructor in the Certificate Programme in Gender & Development Studies. She teaches the distance Certificate Programme from Barbados. She is currently completing her research thesis for the M.Sc. in Gender & Development Studies at the University of the West Indies. She acts as facilitator for the courses: Issues of Gender and Power in Caribbean Society: Politics, Religion and the Law ( GEND 1003 ) and Gender and the Caribbean Family: Organisation and relationships ( GEND 1104 ).
