Passing of Sir Everton Weekes

It is with deep regret and sadness that the Faculty of Sport notes the passing of Sir Everton Weekes on July 1. The last and perhaps most formidable of the 3W’s, Sir Everton had made an impression of the game of cricket worldwide such that over 60 years after his exploits people still skipped a beat at hearing his name. His contemporaries from fear, his successors from admiration and his well wishers from respect. Sir Everton’s exploits on the field were well known, ending with a formidable Test Average of 58.61 inclusive of 5 consecutive Test centuries. Off the field Sir Everton was an icon for the region through his community service in Barbados.

The University of the West Indies had the honour of awarding him as an “immortal” at the last Vice Chancellor’s match in 2019. Sir Everton was made the esteemed patron of the 3Ws Oval at the Cave Hill Campus. The Faculty of Sport mourns his passing. Through our Academy of Sport at Cave Hill, we are committed to honouring his legacy. The 3Ws cricket ground remains a lasting memory of him and the other two W’s (Sir Frank Worrell and Sir Clyde Walcott). This is the place where all who wish to pay their personal respect are invited to visit.

Sir Ev, as he was affectionately known, played a long and distinguished innings of life. He influenced and inspired cricketers all over the world. He was truly a global hero.

The Faculty of Sport expresses sincerest condolences to the family, friends and many fans around the world, on his passing.

Rest well Sir Ev.
