Bridgetown, Barbados Data

Abstract

The Survey on Health, Welfare and Aging Among the Elderly in Bridgetown, Barbados interviewed a representative sample of 1508 elderly, non-institutionalised, urban males and females aged 60 years old or older in 1999, 584 males and 924 females. The stratified sampling based on age of oldest household member (60-79 or 80 and older) was used to select households and when households had more than one eligible individual, the Kish selection table was used to select a single study participant. The main purpose of the study was to evaluate the determinants of health and well-being among the elderly in Barbados. For the purposes of the study, urban Barbados was defined as Greater Bridgetown.

Households from the urban region were randomly sampled. In response to items on an interviewer-administered questionnaire, participants in the study provided data on demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, family-household characteristics and intergenerational transfers, health and disability, functional limitations, access to and use of health care services.

Sampling Procedure
Sampling was carried out in two stages. In the first stage, households (the primary sampling units) were randomly selected from an stratified listing of households. In the second stage, a single eligible individual was selected from each household. The Kish selection grid was used to select the single eligible individual from households with more than one eligible person. Strata were defined using the age and number of elderly persons in a household.  The two age groups were 60-79 years and 80 and older.  the two household sizes were one elderly person in the household or more than one elderly person in the household.  Thus there were 4 strata from which households and respondents were selected. The sampling frame of households provided 3000 potential participants.  Data were collected from 1508 participants.

Response Rates
1508  out of the 1878 eligible persons identified provided completed questionnaires yielding a response rate of 80.3%.
