UWI Launches Consulting Company

Barbados, March 5, 2008:     The University of the West Indies (UWI) today (March 5, 2008) launched UWI Consulting, a subsidiary which draws on the expertise at the University and provides advisory and capacity-building services across the region and internationally.

Declared launched by the Hon. Ronald Jones, Barbados’ Minister of Education & Human Resources Development, at a ceremony at the Barbados Hilton, UWI Consulting offers strategic advice, consultancy and related services on all aspects of management, development and innovation to businesses, government, international agencies and community organizations.

The company focuses on policy analysis and development, programme management and project implementation, governance and organization management in a wide range of disciplines.

Noting that the UWI is by far the largest and most significant concentration of advanced knowledge and technical expertise in the Caribbean region, Chairman of the Board of UWI Consulting, UWI Vice Chancellor, Professor E. Nigel Harris, said “we want to be the first point of call for Caribbean businesses, governments and agencies that need in-depth expertise and advice on management, planning and development issue.”

Professor Harris noted that, “UWI has produced most of the region’s Prime Ministers, has helped to shape the politics, culture and identity of the Caribbean and boasts  thousands of graduates who are influential in every walk of life throughout the region and the Diaspora.”

Professor Harris said that , “no other organization knows the Caribbean so well, or is so well-connected, or has done so much to influence its development” and that it is this resource that the UWI would like to make available to everyone who needs it.

The launch event was also addressed by:  Dr. Compton Bourne, President of The Caribbean Development Bank; Mr. Winston Cox, Alternate Executive Director for The Bahamas, Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, The Inter-American Development Bank, Washington, D.C. and Sir Hilary Beckles, Principal, UWI, Cave Hill.
