Located on the grounds of the University of the West Indies, the TMRU was built in 1956 under the guidance of Professor John Waterlow. Detailing a history of places, people and products developed by the TMRU, the book distils the essential scientific contributions made by the research unit over its half-century operation, and provides insight into what makes for survival and stability of research entities in the developing world and the roles played by major stakeholders over the years. The result of ongoing research, the work of the TMRU through the World Health Organization and the Food and Agricultural Organization have had an impact on the practice of medicine and on the lives of people in almost every continent.

The Tropical Metabolism Research Unit, The University of the West Indies, Jamaica, 1956–2006 showcases the contribution of the TMRU in helping governments both in the Caribbean and wider afield to develop comprehensive programmes to address the leading cause of death and morbidity among young children.
