UWI’s first graduate to be called passes – Mr. Roy Bailey

UWI alumnus Roy Bailey had, and continues to have, a historic place in the University’s history as he was the first person to be called and thus the first person to receive a UWI degree at the first graduation ceremony. In 1949, Roy Bailey won a Government of Jamaica Exhibition Scholarship to the then University College of the West Indies (UCWI) which later became The UWI, to read for a BSc Degree in Natural Sciences

In 1952, he was in the first group of graduates, and the first to receive the certificate at the ceremony based on alphabetical order. From 1968 to 1995, he was pivotal in several areas at UWI:

- 1970 Census of the Commonwealth Caribbean - Data Processing Advisor to governments of 15 countries and Visiting Research Fellow in the Census Research Programme having been seconded to UWI from the post of Deputy Director of Statistics at the Department of Statistics (now Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN))
founding Director and pivotal in establishing the University Computing Centre (now Mona Information Technology Services)

- He was able "to blend the spirit of innovation with the strength of tradition in academic programmes for which UWI was being celebrated in the region and beyond.  From the acquisition of an IBM mainframe computer to the building of the computer centre, to establishing data transmission terminals in several departments to training of staff"...... "his contribution was widely respected and valued by persons who understood the importance of such information and its implications for planning and national development".

The above are quotes from the UWI Alumni Citation he received in 2011.
