The University of the West Indies, Mona will be hosting a free concert at The Emancipation Park in Kingston on Friday December 21, 2012 at 6:00 pm.  The concert is part of the Park’s annual staging of Christmas in the Park Concert series.

UWI in the Park, is geared to persons of all ages and aims to open the eyes of the young ones and take the not so young back in time to a traditional Jamaican Christmas experience. According to Michael Holgate, Tutor/Coordinator of the Philip Sherlock  Centre for the Creative Arts at The UWI, Mona “This concert  will take persons on a musical journey back in time to the old time Jamaican Christmas, touch on a bit of the nowadays Christmas experiences and will of course strongly emphasize the true meaning of Christmas”.

“Jamaica this year celebrates 50 Years of Independence. The  UWI also celebrates 50, as although we were founded in 1948, the institution was granted full University Status in 1962 as The University of the West Indies, being able to grant our own degrees. This is a celebration of our country, our culture and a University that has been instrumental in the development of Jamaica and many of our people. This is our way of sharing with the wider community this Christmas and we hope everyone will come out to support UWI’s showcase of a truly Jamaican Christmas” expressed Professor Gordon Shirley, Principal and Pro Vice Chancellor of The UWI, Mona.

UWI in the Park will feature performances by the talented, internationally acclaimed student groups, who have over the years, spread the rich culture and heritage of Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. The line –up includes The University Singers, University Dance Society, University Dramatic Arts Society, UWI Pop Society, UWI Chorale, and the UWI Panoriddim Steel Orchestra. The concert promises to be a memorable one that will set the tone for the joyous Christmas Season.
