UWI Pelicans – the Fredericks

UWI Pelican Janese March brought the following information to our attention as she wishes to highlight the great work of the Fredericks. Distinguished Pelican, Emeritus Professor the Honourable Joseph Frederick OJ, CD, may be the first West Indian to publish in the prestigious British Medical Journal for Human Reproduction. His publication,' Intramyometrial vasopressin as a haemostatic agent during myomectomy’, in 1994, used Vasopressin as a haemostatic agent to prevent blood loss during the removal of Uterine Fibroids and that has saved many women from losing their womb during this procedure. His study has had a world-wide impact, as the drug, Vasopressin, is now used INTERNATIONALLY as a haemostatic agent to prevent blood loss during surgeries.

His daughter, Dr. Sharifa Frederick, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Hugh Wynter Fertility Management Unit had a study with other distinguished Pelicans appear in the American Society for Reproductive Medicine Fertility and Sterility Journal, called, ‘A trial comparing the use of rectal misoprostol plus perivascular vasopressin with perivascular vasopressin alone to decrease myometrial bleeding at the time of abdominal myomectomy’ and continues to contribute commendably to the field of  medicine.
