On May 27, 2018 faithful alumni and Friends of the UWI gathered in Mississauga to attend the annual luncheon and to celebrate both the 30th Anniversary of the UWIAA Toronto Chapter and the 70th Anniversary of The UWI. Ferdinand Fortune assumed the presidency of the Chapter, as Co-president, Michael Henville, died suddenly on March 9, 2018. A moment of silence was held for the known members of the Toronto alumnae who transitioned during the last year—Tueson Dunstan (Mona Arts graduate 1963), Michael Henville (Management Studies, Mona) and Daphne Hart (Mona Arts graduate.) Leroy Crosse, a Committee member and a friend of Michael gave the tribute to Michael, highlighting Michael’s commitment to and deep interest in the Toronto Chapter and The UWI. Wild Fire, a pair of steel pan players ensured Caribbean music complemented the delicious buffet and 30th Anniversary cake. Dr. Upton Allen, UWI Mona Graduate (’81) Senior Head of the Infectious Diseases Division and Interim Medical Director of the Transplant Centre at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and Professor of Paediatrics and Health Policy Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto gave the Keynote Address. Celia Davidson-Francis, Director of Alumni Relations for The UWI, sent a message of good wishes for the ”double-celebration” luncheon and recognized Michael Henville’s invaluable service to the UWI over the years. Through the generous donations of members, the UWIAA Toronto Chapter once again provided scholarships for CAN$4,000 for students in financial need to each of the four campuses. Kudos to Ferdinand Fortune and other planning committee members—Deighton Hutchinson, Sheila De Gannes, Maxine Brown and Jean Forde.
