The Secondary School’s Geography Awareness Photo Competition was an important part of this – the visualisation and representation of landscapes and peoples is an essential skill in Geography, and the entrants showed commendable skill in this field.

The results were as follows:
First Place: “Blue Meets Green”- Sarika Bhageratty, St Francois Girls’ College
Second Place: “Elemental” -Jeremiah Jacob, Naparima Boys’ College
Third Place: “Amazing Cliff”- Patricia Joanna Gordon, San Fernando Secondary School

Geography at UWI St Augustine has had a brief but dynamic history. The subject was taught first in 2005 (prior to this students attended UWI in Jamaica), with a first group of 39 students graduating in 2008. We became a full department in 2012, and should be offering a full BSc degree this year. Meanwhile there are 10 students pursuing MPhil and PhD degrees in a range of environmental topics, from the impact of beach changes on Leatherback Turtles to the public perception of earthquakes in Tobago to the historical geography of Arima. The 2013 Caribbean Rhodes scholarship went to a Trinidadian for the first time in a decade, and the recipient is one of our Geography graduates, shortly to pursue a post-graduate course in climate change impact at the University of Oxford.
