A Professor of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at The UWI’s Faculty of Medical Sciences, Professor Seetharaman’s expansive research in the area of critical care led him to question the role of the healthcare system in the death of a patient. In his inaugural lecture, “Keeping ICU patients alive – at all costs?” Professor Seetharaman will explore issues including, what the performance markers of a healthcare unit are, whether ‘death in a hospital’ can be interpreted as a failure of the healthcare system, the concept of ‘death’ in contemporary society, the role of life-support technology in medically futile patients and how cost influences the decision-making process.

Professor Seetharaman is also the Deputy Dean of Graduate Studies and Research at The UWI’s St. Augustine Campus, and the Director of Operating Theatres, at the EWMSC.
