The Talking Trees Literary Fiesta

May 25, 2019

The Talking Trees Literary Fiesta will take place at the Two Seasons Guest House in Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth on that date and we hope all literary aficionados will be there!

Organised in collaboration with the Department of Literatures in English (DLIE) at the Mona Campus of The University of the West Indies and the Gloria Lyn Memorial Fund (GLMF), the Fiesta is a family-oriented day, immersing participants in the written and spoken word.

Presenters are selected to engage the listeners, excite emotions and provocatively test their thoughts. A children’s programme that runs simultaneously with the main event ensures that younger patrons are entertained and they get the opportunity to make a presentation on the main stage.

Two Seasons Talking Trees Literary Fiesta had its genesis in 2011 as one of the events of the Treasure Beach Bread Basket Festival (TBBBF) held in May of that year. The Festival offered a smorgasbord of cultural, culinary, musical, literary and visual art events at various locations in Treasure Beach, the home of community tourism in Jamaica.

The second staging of Two Seasons Talking Trees Literary Fiesta was in February 2012, as part of the Treasure Beach Culture Fest, similar in nature to TBBBF but held earlier in the year, as the Calabash International Literary Festival was to return in May, after a one-year hiatus in 2011. In 2014, the third staging was held in Kingston,

The Fiesta returned to the grounds of Two Seasons Guest House in Treasure Beach in May 2015 and was held for the first time in collaboration with the DLIE and the GLMF that was established in honour of a former lecturer in the department to recognise and support students who have excelled in literature at Mona. The collaboration is seen as one of the avenues for the DLIE to take its activities beyond the campus, and to share and encourage the appreciation for literature, which has long been considered to be a foundation for visionary leadership, and can be a catalyst to inspire the youth, and encourage today’s greatest thinkers.

The success of that collaboration led to the partnership continuing for the fifth staging of Two Seasons Talking Trees Literary Fiesta in 2017, which incorporated a fashion show and live music on the day, and workshops on the following day. The collaboration will continue for the sixth one on May 25, 2019.

For 2019, the thrust will be to encourage the participation of young people, complemented by the readings of established writers. One way of involving the youth is through engaging with the schools prior to the Fiesta in May. The GLMF and the School of Education at The UWI Mona Campus in association with the DLIE will be running literary competitions in the schools to unearth and encourage talent, with a view to the winners appearing on the Talking Trees stage.
