Sod Turning for New Workforce Research Centre at The UWI, St. Augustine

Professor Sankat said the CWRD will focus on harmonizing, standardizing and coordinating labour market research as he welcomed guests on Tuesday July 10, 2012 at the commemoration of construction of the CWRD, held at The UWI, St. Augustine Campus, at the Office of the Campus Principal, which was part of the sod-turning event.

UWI hosts Conference on Revenue Management in Hydrocarbon Economies

{gallery}http://www.flickr.com/photos/theuwi/sets/72157630433306056/{/gallery} The Trade and Economic Development Unit (TEDU) at The UWI Department of Economics hosted a Conference on Revenue Management in Hydrocarbon Economies. This conference took place from June 20th-22nd, 2012 at the Port of Spain Ballroom, HYATT Regency, Port of Spain.

This conference brought together local, regional and international experts in the field of revenue management in the context of a dominant hydrocarbon sector, as well as to enhance the resource revenue management process in Trinidad and Tobago.

Professor Richard Auty, Professor Emeritus of Economic Geography at Lancaster University, was the feature speaker. Specially invited guests included Professor Clement Sankat, The UWI St. Augustine Campus Principal; Mr. Ewart Williams, Governor of the Central Bank; Mr. Maurice Suite, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance; Dr. Hunter Monre, International Development Bank; Mrs. Valarie Mercer-Blackman, Inter-American Development Bank; Indera Sagewan-Alli, Caribbean Centre for Competiveness, UWI; and Mr. Matthew Genasci, Revenue Watch Institute.

One highlight of the conference was the presentation of prizes to the winners of its essay competition for secondary school students. This competition specifically targeted CAPE students who are studying Economics and required participants to write on the topic: In what ways can the foreign companies operating in the energy sector become more active in sustainable development in Trinidad and Tobago? Monetary prizes and trophies were awarded to the writers of the best three essays.

Entrepreneurship Boot Camp Opening Ceremony, The UWI St. Augustine

{gallery}http://www.flickr.com/photos/theuwi/sets/72157630391486228/{/gallery} Winner of The University of the West Indies (UWI), the National Entrepreneurship Development Company Limited (NEDCO) and the Entrepreneurial Training Institute and Incubation Centre’s Entrepreneurship Boot Camp Business Plan Competition will receive $50,000 in funding to start their business. The camp started with an Opening Ceremony July 2nd and continues till the 6th and 20th, 2012, at Lecture Rooms 2 and 3 of the Institute of Critical Thinking, UWI St. Augustine Campus.

This business training series aims to develop an entrepreneurial mind-set in recent university graduates and final year undergraduates. Participants will be introduced to the idea that entrepreneurship is a viable avenue for exploration, and can expect to receive exclusive insight into the real-life challenges of successful entrepreneurs. They should leave the dynamic and interactive environment of the boot camp, having learnt the steps to be taken in starting their own business. Equipped with the skills essential for writing a business plan, participants will develop their own plans during camp, to be entered into the Business Plan Competition. The competition’s second place winner has the opportunity to gain $30,000 toward their business, while the third-place winner will receive $20,000.
