Release: UWI Mona Announces Partnership with Global Mentorship Initiative (GMI)
Patients with sickle cell disease at times may require surgical removal of their spleen (splenectomy) as part of the treatment for this condition. Operating on these patients whose blood counts are already in a much lower state than usual can pose significant threat to life and well-being. Surgeons at The University of the West Indies (UWI) operating at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) have shown that their approach of giving blood transfusions to carefully selected patients undergoing this surgical procedure, has achieved excellent outcomes.
