AUDIO: MARSHALL ON UWI CARNIVAL

Speak ‘Carnival’ and Caribbean people think of the annual pre-Lenten bacchanal for which Trinidad & Tobago is widely known; though Carnival has homes all across the region.

UWI CARNIVAL

Traditionally, Carnival is the last burst of celebration before Ash Wednesday and the 40 days of Lent; a timeframe that shifts according to the Christian calendar but generally falls in early February – this year Ash Wednesday is February 10.

JAN 1949: Month of Celebration & Tragedy!

(We promised a follow-up to the approval of a Royal Charter for the UCWI. Here it is:)
In the first two weeks of January 1949, the fledgling University College of the West Indies was celebrating as pieces of its governance structure clicked into place; a week later it was touched by tragedy! How so?

FIRST GRADUATES: January 13, 1953

The UWI often talks about its first students – the fabled 33 students from across the Caribbean, 23 men and 10 women, who in 1948 were the pioneers of a tertiary education product that would grow to reach tens of thousands at a time.
But there is another group of pioneers – the first students to graduate from the then University College of the West Indies (UCWI).
