Mervyn C. Alleyne Conference

Registration is closed for this event

Hosted in collaboration with Cave Hill: Department of Language, Linguistics and Literature, Mona: Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy, St Augustine: Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics, and the Society for Caribbean Linguistics (SCL).

Mervyn Alleyne, as one of the earliest scholars of Caribbean origin to engage in the discipline of Linguistics, as well as the original and valuable contribution to that discipline as well as to a range of others associated with the study of the Caribbean, is worthy of commemoration. This is particularly true at the institution with which he has been associated practically all of his adult life, the University of the West Indies.

We have made this a truly global event, including not just UWI but the University of Puerto Rico, the University of Chicago, University College Dublin, South Africa and beyond, and cover ALL the disciplines he touched as a scholar, from ethno-botany, through anthropology and the study of folklore, and research in race, colour and ethnicity, to doctor-patient discourse, and the range of areas of linguistics, from Romance to Creole, sociolinguistics and language standardization. We have compiled the most comprehensive set of activities possible in order to truly represent the fullness of his contribution to our understanding of ourselves.
