Feature of UWIMAA Board Member — Professor Joseph “Mike” Branday

Professor Joseph ‘Mike’ Branday was born in Jamaica in 1947.

He attended St. Georges College where he represented the school in lawn tennis and graduated from the University of the West Indies in 1973 with an MBBS Degree. A rotating Internship included stints at the University Hospital of the West Indies, the Bustamante Hospital for Children, and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados where he had spent his final undergraduate year. He soon joined the fledgling postgraduate training programme in Surgery at Mona and was its second graduate in 1979. He traveled to Scotland on scholarship where he married Trinidadian, Dr. Jacinta Anthony (Class of 1980) and returned to the Department of Surgery at Mona in 1980 with her and with his Fellowship in Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

His early clinical teachers and mentors at Mona included many early UWI graduates, like Mike Woo Ming, Don Christian, Barbara Johnson, Owen Minott, and Keith McKenzie. As a junior clinical student, he still remembers his first patient encounter with Herbie Ho Ping Kong, then a senior registrar in Medicine. His stay in the Department of Surgery with a joint consultant appointment at the University Hospital provided an opportunity for him to continue developing his love for teaching.

A Commonwealth Academic Scholarship and sabbatical leave allowed him to travel to the UK and in 1995, he received an MSc in Medical Education from the University of Wales in Cardiff. Under Dean Nigel Gibbs, he chaired the Faculty Curriculum Committee and led a major curriculum reform that replaced the traditional, discipline-based model with an integrated, system-based structure in 2001. That year, he was promoted to Professor of Surgery and in 2005, he received the Vice Chancellors' Award for Teaching.

He served the University Hospital as a surgical consultant and Director of the Jamaica Burn Unit and during his tenure, he spent short periods filling in as a Surgeon in the Cayman Islands and the British Virgin Islands. He has acted as PAHO Consultant to the Belize Medical Council and to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. He is a retired Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and holds an honorary fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians. In 2010, he transferred to the Cave Hill campus in Barbados as Dean of the newly established Faculty of Medical Sciences where he remained until 2015 before returning to Mona as Director of Medical Education.

He has now served the Faculty for over 40 years. In addition to his usual clinical and academic responsibilities, he has been closely involved with the UWI quality assurance systems and has participated in UWI cross-campus internal quality reviews and curriculum harmonization activities. He is a member of the Board of The Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions (CAAM-HP) and led visiting teams for accreditation site visits to regional medical schools on their behalf.

He is presently on a post-retirement contract as Advisor to the Dean on projects focussing on curriculum development, quality assurance, and accreditation.
