UWI Class of ’68 Marks its Golden Anniversary
Members of the “Class of 1968” graduates of UWI, will stage a grand Golden Anniversary Celebration October 3 – 7, 2018, to mark 50 years since their graduation from The University of the West Indies. A Planning Committee, co-chaired by Mr Danny James and Dr Marjorie Cobham, has been busy since April of this year organising the planned events for batchmates, who are coming from all over the Caribbean and the Diaspora.
The planned events include a guided ‘Campus Tour’ on the morning of Thursday, October 4th highlighting the new developments on the Mona Campus, followed by a ‘Lunch and Lyme’ at the small park across from the ‘Alumni House’ at 28 West Road. The Anniversary celebrations will climax on Friday, October 5th, with a ‘Gala Gathering and Roll Call of Graduates’, in the Gold Room of the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Guests will be treated to a dinner catered by Cuisine Art, entertainment by the Mona Campus’ Classical and Jazz Ensemble (CAJE), and emceed by ’68 Class Member, the inimitable Blossom O’Meally-Nelson. On Saturday, October 6, the members of the Medical Class, who were the first cohort to graduate with a UWI Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree − as opposed to a UCWI degree − will have their reunion dinner at the Terra Nova Hotel beginning at 6:30 p.m.
No celebration would be complete without a thanksgiving service and this will be held at the University Chapel at 9:15 am on Sunday, October 7th to be followed by a ‘Last Lap Breakfast’ at the Mary Seacole Hall Senior Common Room – an appropriate end to the celebrations.
“We want to make this gathering of graduates memorable in every way”, states Committee Co-Chair, Danny James, “so plans also include the publication of a special commemorative Booklet, entitled ‘From Gown to Town’, which will highlight some of the achievements of our ‘68ers and their contribution to national and regional development, as well as take a pictorial look back at the ‘good ole’ student days”
