UWI Lawyers and Medics – check this out!

Given the international concerns and reactions that arose in relation to George Floyd’s  death, the opportunity to host a series of online events to highlight the forensic pathology issues associated with the investigation of Deaths in Custody presented itself and a trilogy of symposia was conceptualised and planned by the Department of Pathology and Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Washington, DC who were to otherwise host a previously planned in-person conference in Washington in June 2020.

The first titled: “Deaths in Custody: A Comprehensive International Conversation”  featured a nine (9) member panel of expert international speakers. The second titled: “Deaths in Custody 2: International Case Studies”  garnered the extensive participation of many medical students from all three UWI campuses who were offered complimentary registration for the event through the newly formed Pathology Club of UWI which is supported by the Caribbean Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Student Initiative of the University of Ottawa and the Eastern Ontario Regional Laboratory Association (EORLA).

UPCOMING:  "Deaths in Custody 3: Judicial Considerations" will take place on September 26, 2020. This third and final event will highlight the legal and judicial side of deaths in custody cases and should be of particular interest to the all legally qualified UWI alumni and all staff and students of the Faculty of Law and regional LEC law schools (Hugh Wooding, Norman Manley, Eugene Depuch)

Registration for this event is still open and can be accessed via this link on the website of the University of Ottawa which also includes the full programme, speakers' profiles and abstracts - https://med.uottawa.ca/pathology/news/deaths-custody-3-judicial-considerations
