Order of Ontario bestowed on UWI Alumna Rosemary Moodie

The Honourable, Senator Rosemary Moodie – Toronto, was appointed to the Order of Ontario by The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and Chancellor of the Order of Ontario. The province’s highest honour recognizes individuals whose exceptional achievements have a lasting legacy in the province, in Canada and beyond.

Professor Moodie is a Canadian senator and distinguished neonatologist and pediatrician. Her career has steered social change and expanded health care access for society’s vulnerable. She has provided leadership to many health organizations and projects, including the development of Canada’s largest affordable housing project for low-income women.

A native of Jamaica, Senator Moodie attended the St. Hugh’s High School and the Faculty of Medical Sciences at The UWI Mona, graduating with her MBBS in 1982. Among her awards are the Order of Distinction Rank of Commander, Government of Jamaica; University of the West Indies Medical Alumni, Distinguished Service Award for Maternal and Child Health; Extraordinary Women: Making a Difference Award, Kiwanis Club, Jamaica; and 120 Year Anniversary St. Hugh’s High School for Girls, Excellence in Alumni. In 2017, she was conferred with the Order of Distinction in the Rank of Commander for outstanding contribution in philanthropy, community development and medicine in the Jamaican Diaspora of Canada. She continues to advocate for the well-being of women and children in the Senate of Canada.
