Dr. The Hon. Hubert Alexander Minnis
UWI Alumnus, Dr. The Hon. Hubert Alexander Minnis M.D. is the fourth Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. Dr. Minnis graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, UWI Mona, in 1980 with the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree (M.B.B.S.) and completed his specialized studies in Jamaica in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1985. He is a Member of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (MRCOG) and a Fellow of The Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FRCOG).
Interestingly, the current Director of The UWI School of Clinical Medicine and Research, The Bahamas, Dr. Robin Roberts remains a close friend from their days studying together at UWI , Mona and the Acting UWI Alumni Association President of The Bahamas Chapter, Dr. Mortimer Moxey also remembers their student days as being “full of hard work, excellent clinical training and experiences and great camaraderie”.
Dr. Minnis returned home and began serving the Bahamian people at the Princess Margaret Hospital as a specialist physician in Obstetrics and Gynecology. While at the Princess Margaret Hospital he served as a Consultant and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and as Deputy Chief of Staff. He had a stellar medical career in both the public and private sectors where it is estimated that Dr. Minnis delivered over five thousand babies
As a part of his commitment to the wider community, Dr. Minnis served as president of the Medical Association of The Bahamas (MAB), and as a member of the Government appointed Medical Council. He also served as Chairman of the Hotel Corporation of The Bahamas and was an Associate Lecturer at The University of West Indies in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He has a special interest in, and dedication to, the promotion of Bahamian ownership in the economy and in the redevelopment of traditional Over-the-Hill communities where he still retains deep roots and connections.
He is married and is the proud father of three sons, one of whom is a medical doctor by profession and like his father has specialized in OB Gyn, as well as fertility.
We salute our UWI Pelican, Dr. The Hon. Hubert Minnis, as he has now moved from giving service as a doctor, to giving service as the Prime Minister of the people of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.
