fbpx CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY 2017 | Alumni Online Community

May 18 is International Museum Day and the UWI Museum is joining with the Jamaica Military Museum to focus on aspects of Jamaica’s interface with the world wars of the 20th century.

The UWI Museum will focus on the internment camps which housed enemy aliens in the Kingston area during World War 2 (1939-1945) – one of them located on the site of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus. On May 18, a talk on the World War 2 internment camps in Jamaica by Museum Curator Suzanne Francis-Brown will precede the showing of a documentary film titled Germans in Jamaica: Of Wars, Spies & Camps, produced by Dr Kevin Kennedy of the Appalachian State University in the US. A pop-up exhibition on World War 2 internment in Jamaica, Seven Decades Ago will run for the week of May 15-19.
The exhibition will be mounted with the collaboration of the Jamaica Military Museum, our partner in the IMD celebration. Also on May 18, the Military Museum will focus on an aspect of Jamaica’s World War 1 history, hosting a lecture by Ryerson University’s Prof Hyacinth Simpson . The lecture is titled ” ‘A Bad Blunder’: The Story of the 3rd Jamaica Contingent & the Halifax Incident of 1916.” A tour of the Military Museum, including its World War 1 displays, will follow.
The flyer gives times for the IMD presentations. Please get in touch with the UWI Museum (Tel: 876 977 6065; < uwi.museum@uwimona.edu.jm> ) or the Jamaica Military Museum at Up Park Camp, Kingston for more details.
