UWIAA DC assists Medical student achieve her goals for 2020

Aspiring doctor and UWI medical student Ms. Mikiko Wan is very happy as the UWIAA Washington DC Chapter has helped her achieve her major goal for 2020, that of securing financial assistance for her second year in the Bachelor’s in Medicine, Bachelor’s in Surgery (MBBS) degree programme.

She worked hard and excelled at Excelsior High School and was elated when she received the Government of Jamaica scholarship, as the government pays 80% of the US$28,000.00 per annum tuition and she is responsible for 20%.  She remains very grateful, but was unable to find this amount as she only has the support of her retired grandparents and receives no help from either parent to assist her with her education.

She tried applying for a student loan, but was ineligible as she has a scholarship. She also applied for twelve other scholarships, but has not heard any good news for the same reason. Happily she did receive, from the very generous Grace Kennedy Foundation, a merit scholarship of JA$100,000, however it was still not enough to complete her payments, so she was constantly worried and stressed. The ongoing Covid -19 pandemic just exacerbated the situation.

Serendipitously, the UWIAA Washington DC Chapter, agreed to help her with US$5,000 which covers her tuition costs for this year.

Mikiko, in her thank you letter to the Chapter says “I did not know how I would have gotten through this academic year without your help and I would just like to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I would also like to thank you for recognizing my potential as a student and as an aspiring doctor, and furthermore, for seeing my burning desire to get the help I need to continue my journey which I know I was made for. Your assistance has made me hopeful and has encouraged me to keep the faith that everything will work out for me. I will continue to work hard and do my best to maintain a high standard in school and to improve on weaker areas. I send to you my utmost appreciation. God bless you.”

Kudos to the UWIAA DC Chapter for their assistance – President - Ms. Barbara Brissett, First Vice President & Immediate Past President - Dr. Peter Edwards, Second Vice President - Dr. Noel Godfrey, Treasurer- Mr. Neville Depass, Secretary – Ms. Lorna John and Assistant Treasurer – Ms. Jehann Jack.
