Launch of US$1.5 Million Dollar Endowment - A Word from Chancellor Emeritus Sir. George Alleyne

The Board of the UWIMAA has had numerous planning sessions to establish new initiatives to address some identified problems. One such initiative has been the launch of the University of the West Indies Medical Alumni Association Endowment which marks the 33rd year of the Association as well as celebrating in advance the 75th anniversary of the University. I am sure you all know that the University began in 1948 with 33 medical students-which makes us the founding Faculty. The aims of the Endowment which is targeted at US$ 1.5 million are to support the medical faculties in several ways and very importantly to provide mentorship and relieve the debt burden of needy students.

The funds from the Endowment are deposited in The UWI Regional Endowment Fund and the UWIMAA has signed a formal Memorandum of Understanding with that Fund to codify the management of our Endowment and the methods by which the proceeds will be allocated.

To date the endowment has attracted donations and pledges from a small number of alumni and these totals approximately US$800,000 - 2022 will see an appeal to all medical alumni. The largest donation to date has been $250,000 from Farley Cleghorn and the largest pledge is 200,000 pounds by Earl O’Brien. While the planning for the launch of the Endowment has occupied most of the time of the Board, there have been discussions on how the Association can engage the attention of the large number of alumni who can contribute to the faculties in multiple ways. The Association must also restructure itself to acknowledge the geographical dispersion of the faculties. The Board is currently developing a communications strategy to address some of these issues.

Best regards,

Sir. George Alleyne

Chancellor Emeritus
