Sir George has served as Chancellor to The UWI for the last eight years and has been a long-standing friend of the HEU. His contributions to the development of health systems in the region and beyond have been invaluable. In 1995, Sir George became Director of the Pan American Sanitary Bureau (PASB), Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) and completed a second four-year term, in January 2003. In 2003, he was elected Director Emeritus of the PASB. From February 2003 until December 2010, he was the UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean. Sir George currently holds an Adjunct professorship on the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University.
The building renaming is part of a wider initiative to recognize persons who contributed significantly to the success and well being of the Campus and the University. This initiative falls under the St. Augustine Campus 50th Anniversary commemorations.
