The Youth Crime Watch of Jamaica, in collaboration with the Departments of Chemistry and Physics of the University of the West Indies, Mona, will launch the Biodiesel Production Initiative (which is funded by the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme). The Project seeks to engage individuals from at-risk community and schools in energy diversification, transportation, education and climate change mitigation. The 18-month pilot project seeks to sensitise and engage students and community members from marginalised community to understand the environmental degradation, health and pollution risks which accompany the improper disposal of waste material, such as waste vegetable oil, may have caused. It will also seek to explore the feasibility of converting this waste vegetable oil into biofuels which can serve to decrease Jamaica’s US$1.6 million (2011) spent yearly on fossil fuel importation as well as the concomitant emission of Greenhouse Gases (GHG).
