The UWI’s senior leadership portfolios expand

Among the decisions taken at the sitting of the annual meeting of University Council last month was the assignment of additional duties to Pro Vice-Chancellors and Campus Principals. This, in keeping with the University’s current COVID-19 cost-cutting and cost-containment strategies.

Consistent with the Council’s approval to restructure its senior leadership portfolios, Dr Luz Longsworth, with effect from July 1, 2020, will assume responsibility for the oversight of the University’s global affairs in addition to her role as Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the Open Campus. 

UWI among world’s top Golden Age universities

The UWI is now among the world’s top 100 Universities in new rankings released by Times Higher Education (THE) in the category - ‘Golden Age University Rankings’. This covers established higher education institutions across the world that have been around for 50 to 80 years.

Alumnus Earl Jarrett elected Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Jamaica

UWI Graduate Earl Jarrett was elected from among the four selected commissioners of the ECJ in keeping with the Electoral Commission (Interim) Act 2006 which states that “the selected commissioners shall elect one of their number to be chairman of the commission and so inform the governor general”. The ECJ comprises nine members  the director of elections, four selected commissioners, and four nominated commissioners, two nominated on the advice of the prime minister and two on the advice of the leader of the Opposition.

We celebrate the life and service of Mrs Austin Alleyne, retired Campus Registrar of The UWI Cave Hill Campus

Born on January 15, 1932, she received her early education at the then St. Michael Girls’ School and Queen’s College in Barbados.  She later received a Bachelor of Arts and a Diploma in Education from the University College of the West Indies and a M.S. Education in University Administration from Indiana University.

UWI OC Belize – New Head of Site

Dr Sharmayne Saunders has been appointed as Head of Site, Open Campus Belize.

She has built a 25-year career in business, consultancy and academia. Following several leadership roles in the private sector, Dr Saunders joined The UWI Open Campus in 2008 as Programme Officer and was also a Course Facilitator/Lecturer for undergraduate, postgraduate and continued professional education courses. She continues to provide postgraduate research teaching and supervision to many students

Dr Samantha Nicholson-Spence

Dr Samantha Nicholson-Spence is a medical internist who heads the Department of Medicine at Kingston Public Hospital (KPH). After graduating from The UWI with her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 2007, she did her internship at KPH, and has worked there since. Even while she completed her residency at the University of Miami, she kept in touch and was on a flight back to Kingston right after her last exam.

UWI St Augustine appoints first female Professor of Science

The UWI St Augustine has appointed the first female Professor of Science, Professor Judith Gobin. She is also Head of the Department of Life Sciences, the largest Department in the Faculty of Science and Technology. Not only is she an academic but she has contributed significantly at the national, regional and global level to promote and apply scientific knowledge to solve real-world problems.”

Nikki Bradley, UWI Alumna, Joins the Law Firm Barrett & Farahany

Nikki Bradley, an alumna of the University of the West Indies, has joined the employment law firm Barrett & Farahany in Atlanta, Georgia, as an associate.

Nikki earned her Bachelor of Science degree in International Relations in 2005. She later earned her law degree from Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School.

Dr. Jennifer Young excels!

Dr. Jennifer Young has been appointed to the highly valued and pivotal position of Neonatal‐ Perinatal Fellowship Program Director in the Division of Neonatology at the University of Toronto.

Ain Earle makes her mark on TT’s fashion industry

Ain Earle, with an undergraduate and postgraduate degree in hospitality from The UWI, founded Fashion Arch in 2015 and serves as its lead consultant. The company helps local fashion designers develop their business models.

Professor Geneive Henry

UWI alumna, Professor Geneive Henry who is the Chair of Susquehanna University’s Department of Chemistry, has been awarded the Outstanding Mentorship Award from the Chemistry Division of the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR). She is the Charles B. Degenstein Professor of Chemistry at Susquehanna. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in chemistry with first-class honours and her Doctorate in organic chemistry from The UWI.

UWI grad expands women’s healthcare in Tobago

Alumni Relations – IAD in association with the YoPro Global Foundation was pleased to host Dr. Renee Boyce’s session: “Conversations around Corona” as part of the Soft and Life Skills Series (SLSS) on April 9, 2020. It was positively welcomed and participants stayed online to have further questions answered. We thank Dr. Boyce, UWI alumna and Pelican Perks partner for sharing her expertise with the alumni population.

15 year old Francoise Hall, a student at the Pensionnat du Saint-Nom-de-Marie, in Montreal Canada had been studying abroad in Sevilla, Spain since January 9th 2020.

Inaugural Five Islands Council Meeting held

The University of the West Indies’ new Five Islands Campus in Antigua and Barbuda, crossed yet another milestone on Monday, April 6, 2020, when its Council met for the first time. In a virtual meeting setting, members of the Campus Council, chaired by Mr Aziz Hadeed, heard a report on the campus’ accomplishments since its opening in September 2019.

Jennifer Lester is Director of Corporate Services and Facilities at the IMF

International Monetary Fund (IMF) appointed UWI alumna Ms. Jennifer Lester as Director of Corporate Services on February 18, 2020. She received her Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., and holds a Master of Science degree in International Relations and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Modern Languages from The UWI.
