Motherhood in Childhood: Facing the Challenge of Adolescent Pregnancy

{gallery}http://www.flickr.com/photos/theuwi/sets/72157641656567704/{/gallery} On December 9, 2013, the Open Lectures Committee of The UWI St. Augustine, in collaboration with the Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) hosted the Distinguished Open Lecture of Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director of the UNFPA and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Dr. Osotimehin's lecture was titled on "Motherhood in Childhood, Facing the Challenge of Adolescent Pregnancy" and took place at the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) from 2:30pm.

UWI T20 Cricket Tournament

{gallery}http://www.flickr.com/photos/theuwi/sets/72157641654422423/{/gallery} The UWI hosted the second national UWI T20 Cricket Tournament from January 10th to 25th, 2014, featuring sixteen teams, playing through a preliminary, quarterfinal and semi-final round, with undefeated teams progressing to the final.

Teenage batsman Amir Jangoo slammed 45 off 39 balls while former national youth team wicket-keeper Aaron Alfred hit 41 off 31 balls to lead Merry Boys to a convincing five-wicket win over Munroe Road. Merry Boys, who were runners-up in the inaugural tournament in 2012, won the toss and restricted Munroe Road to 134 for seven before getting to 135 for five with three overs to spare. All tournament matches were played at the Sir Frank Worrell Cricket Grounds of the UWI Sport and Physical Education Centre (SPEC).

Merry Boys took home a TT$25,000 prize.

{gallery}http://www.flickr.com/photos/theuwi/sets/72157641561336363/{/gallery} On Sunday February 23, 2014, The UWI’s Department of Creative and Festival Arts (DCFA) presented the annual carnival heritage fair and showcase featuring performances by traditional mas characters, vintage kaiso, pan, and local food and drink, from noon, at the DCFA, Agostini Street, St. Augustine.

A special feature of this year’s installment of The Old Yard was the Barbados Landship Movement.

UWI STAT members part of successful team at the Americas Rounds of the Price Media Moot Court Competition

Team 403 from the Faculty of Law, UWI Mona Campus went to New York from January 21-24,2014 and they did us proud!

The three member team comprising of UWISTAT Ambassadors Ms. Lanasia Nicholas (VP of Finance), Ms. Rowana-Kay Campbell (VP of Membership) and Mr. Litrow Hickson along with their coach Ms. Gabrielle Elliot-Williams, traveled to the Benjamin Cardozo School of Law to compete in the Americas Rounds of the Price Media Moot Court Competition. The competition explores the issues of comparative media law and policy as well as freedom of expression rights and privacy rights.
