Project: “Government of Jamaica (GOJ)/United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Study on the Sustainable Development Goals”
In 2017, the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) was contracted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), on behalf of the Government of Jamaica, to prepare the country’s first Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Country Report. To undertake this assignment, SALISES formed a multi-disciplinary team led by Prof. Aldrie Henry-Lee and Dr. Arlene Bailey - Principal and Co-Principal Investigators. Other members of the team included Prof. Anthony Clayton, Dr. Carroll Edwards, Dr. Georgiana Gordon-Strachan, Mrs. Yhanore Johnson-Coke, Ms. Kemesha Kelly, Mr. Richard Leach, Dr. Kurt McLaren, Dr. Patricia Northover, Mr. Orin Spence, Dr. Godfrey St. Bernard, Ms. Nicole Thwaites, Mr. Giovanni Williams and Dr. Michael Witter. The team produced the following outputs/reports:
- Sustainable Development Goals Report, with a special focus on the key thematic areas to be covered by the 2018 High Level Political Forum (HLPF) – SDGs 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 12 (Sustainable Consumption and Production), 15 (Life on Land) and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals);
- Statistical Annex;
- Report on country efforts towards “Leaving No One Behind” and including Jamaica’s most vulnerable in development processes;
- Communications and Advocacy Plan for the SDGs.
The study highlighted some of the good practices for which Jamaica has been recognized; lessons learned in mainstreaming and localizing the SDGs and accelerating implementation; challenges which may be faced during the implementation process; areas for capacity building in monitoring and reporting on the SDGs; and related areas where additional support may be useful.

Project: Government of Jamaica (GOJ)/ International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mainstreaming Migration into National Development Strategies: Feasibility Study for a Global Jamaican Diaspora/Immigration Card

This study was supported by the Government of Jamaica (GOJ), based on a proposed study of the Economic Growth Council (EGC), through the Ministry of National Security (MNS) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade (MFAFT), with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Jamaica.
The general objective of this research project was to undertake a feasibility study on the creation of a Global Jamaican Immigration Card (GJIC) for issuance to the members of Jamaican Diaspora. In particular, the results of the feasibility study aimed to provide support to the Government of Jamaica in justifying the acceptance, modification or rejection of the recommendation to create a Global Jamaican Immigration Card for issuance to the Jamaican Diaspora.
This Feasibility Study enabled the further sharing of several perspectives by members of the Jamaican Diaspora, as well as interactions on key topics within the Jamaican community of stakeholders. Careful consideration of these perspectives in the decision-making process highlighted the on-going contributions being made by resident and non-resident Jamaicans to the nation’s development, and assists with the identification of the way forward for cohesive and ongoing mutually beneficial forms of diaspora engagement.
