Future Proofing: Leading the Caribbean AI Revolution
Research Cluster on Generative AI for Good Research
In 2024, The UWI School for Graduate Studies and Research launched the “Research Cluster on Generative AI for Good Research,” a pioneering network uniting researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers across the Caribbean. This cluster, announced at a launch event at The UWI’s Regional Headquarters in Jamaica, aims to position the Caribbean at the forefront of artificial intelligence (AI) innovation while ensuring ethical, equitable adoption that benefits all, particularly vulnerable communities. The initiative, led by Dr Curtis Charles of The UWI Five Islands Campus and supported by experts from The UWI’s St Augustine, Cave Hill, and Mona campuses, will develop globally competitive postgraduate AI programmes. Each UWI campus will establish an AI laboratory, foster collaboration and integrate diverse regional perspectives from government, business, and civil society. Over the next two years, the cluster plans to bolster its digital presence and host seminars and workshops to advance AI knowledge and application.
