Future-Proofing: Leading the Caribbean AI Revolution
Caribbean AI Implementation Plan
The Caribbean is determined not to be left behind in the global artificial intelligence revolution, as highlighted at The UWI Five Islands Campus’ second annual AI Conference in Antigua and Barbuda. At the event, CAF – Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean – presented its comprehensive Roadmap for National AI Implementation, urging the region to take ownership of its digital future. Dr Stacy Richards-Kennedy, CAF’s Regional Manager for the Caribbean, emphasised the need for ethical, inclusive AI strategies rooted in Caribbean priorities, warning against reliance on foreign frameworks and datasets that could reinforce existing inequalities. The conference, themed “AI Innovation for Caribbean Sustainability,” brought together leaders from government, academia, and the private sector to address both opportunities and risks of AI. Enrique Zapata, CAF’s Principal Executive for Digital Transformation, outlined the five pillars of the Roadmap: policy frameworks, infrastructure, public sector transformation, talent development, and responsible AI governance. CAF is investing in the region, having already dedicated $2.8 billion to digital infrastructure, and is working closely with The UWI and CARICOM to foster innovation, research, and talent. Through this collaborative approach, the Caribbean aims to shape its AI future, building resilient, inclusive, and sovereign digital ecosystems.
