 Mrs. Gloria Barrett-Sobers
Just as I had predicted at the end of Semester I, this academic year has indeed been a most eventful one. The pains-taking consultative process, of which I hope everyone in the University community was at least aware, if not involved in, of formulating the goals and strategies for the next five years, culminated with the approval of the 2007-2012 Strategic Plan by both the University Strategy & Planning Committee and the University Council in June.

The bi-centennial of the formal abolition of the slave trade and of course, the ICC Cricket World Cup Championships were a major focus during the year. Kudos are due to the Cave Hill and St Augustine Campuses which hosted, in fine style, several of the warm-up matches of the CWC. The Mona Campus was the host of the Inter-Campus Student Games, re-named and henceforth to be known as The UWI Games . Participation by both athletes and supporters was the highest ever and the standard of the performances exceeded expectations. Congrats to the Mona team for amassing the most points.

A key development this year was the decision to establish The UWI Open Campus , incorporating the three outreach arms of the UWI – the School of Continuing Studies, the Distance Education Centre and the Tertiary Level Institutions Unit – and with greater autonomy, to better service the non-campus countries and other under-served communities.

I should mention that this is my last message to you, as University Registrar. I leave the UWI, after fifteen years, with a sense of accomplishment and confidence that the foundation has been laid for continuing excellence in administration of this complex institution. Changes in the Management Team, both in the Vice-Chancellery, at the Mona Campus and at the St Augustine Campus are in the offing for the new academic year. Details are given in the ensuing articles.

Our University will be celebrating during the coming academic year the sixtieth anniversary of its founding. Campus-based and University-wide Planning Committees are already engaged in planning the many celebratory activities and events that will be spread throughout the anniversary year. Again, details are given below.
