TERMS AND CONDITIONS 

 

1. ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP
The Dorothy Pine McLarty Postgraduate Scholarship is intended to support a graduate student in the Faculty of Social Sciences or the Faculty of Humanities and Education, The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. The triennial scholarship award is for research degrees related to Elections and Governance in Jamaica.
 
The scholarship award is for three years, with eligibility for renewal each year contingent on satisfactory academic performance. 
 
2. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
The applicant must be/have:
a. Jamaican Nationals who are enrolled in the Faculty of Social Sciences or Faculty of Humanities and Education;  and registered in a research degree related to Elections and Governance in Jamaica
b. Gained at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree (or 3.0 GPA ) at the undergraduate level
 
The awardee will be required to serve in Jamaica for a period of three (3) years immediately following completion of the course of study. 
 
3. VALUE OF SCHOLARSHIPS 
a. Up to J$325,000 per annum
b. The award covers/contributes to the tuition, residence costs (on/off campus) and contributions to books and meals (quarterly stipend)
c. The Awardee may apply for other scholarships/grants and loans to cover other costs
 
4. DURATION OF AWARD:        Three (3) Years (Maximum) 
 
5. NUMBER OF AWARDS: One (every 3 years)
 
6. SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION REQUIREMENT
All applications shall be accompanied by the following documents:
a. Transcript from other Universities (not required for The UWI student applicants)
b. A 500-word personal essay outlining career aspirations and reason for choice of degree programme
c. Evidence of leadership positions at school, university and/or within the wider community; community involvement; and co-curricular activities are desirable
d. 2 reference letters – at least one of which must come from an academic referee attesting to the applicant’s academic ability and potential, demonstrated leadership qualities, and character. (Referees must have known the applicant for at least two years. All referees must affix the official stamp of their office/department/organisation).
 
7. SELECTION PROCESS
a. The scholarship would be advertised on our social media pages, campus and/ or any other University media (and by any other institution named by the Donor).
b. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed by a panel comprising Myers, Fletcher & Gordon representatives and The UWI personnel and any other representative, as selected by the Donor.
 
8. HOW TO APPLY             
a. Submit the completed application form with all the other relevant documents to the School for Graduate Studies and Research via email at sgsr@uwimona.edu.jm with the subject line: ‘Dorothy Pine McLarty Postgraduate Scholarship’, on/before May 05, 2024.
