Welcome to the School of Continuing Studies!
For many years, the School was popularly known as the Extra Mural Department of the University of the West Indies (UWI). Extra mural literally means "beyond the walls" of the University. Since we changed our name, little has changed regarding our primary mandate, which is to reach out to adult learners who, for one reason or another, need professional and vocational training and access to higher education.
You will find that we offer a large range of exciting and challenging courses. They are open to all adults who wish to pursue their dreams to continue with life-long learning. When you register with us, you get more than a class. A large range of support services will be made available to you - our own dedicated Resident Tutors, distance and face to face teaching, library access, departmental computers, advice and guidance.
You can pursue your interests and develop professional and personal skills that will help you in your career, in your leisure pursuits and in your social life. Our programme of courses covers management, employment and IT skills, administration, the humanities, drug addiction treatments, cultural studies, counselling and personal development, and women's studies. Most teaching is in small groups, where you will quickly feel at home.
The students and staff at all of our University Centres provide a warm welcome to everyone and a supportive and friendly environment. If you are studying primarily to pursue an interest, you will find people to share your enthusiasm. If you are returning to learn after a long period away from study, you will find opportunities to progress from introductory courses to higher level, more intensive study - perhaps for a degree.
Whatever your educational past, you will find a demanding but satisfying future at the School of Continuing Studies. We fully support lifelong learning and we are committed to involving as many people as possible in the best traditions and latest trends in education. We look forward to your joining us.
