SOCIAL WELFARE TRAINING CENTRE

 

History

 

The Social Welfare Training Centre is a division of the School of Continuing Studies situated on the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Jamaica . The Centre was built and furnished by the Government of Jamaica in 1962 and was handed over as a gift to the University of the West Indies by the Minister of Development and Welfare in August 1962, to be managed by the Extra-Mural Department as a centre for training in social welfare.

The centre offers regional course for para-professional social workers; a pilot course for the training of youth workers and a number of short courses and seminars.

Core Activities

•  Delivering an annual regional four-month course in the Principles and Practice of Social Work and providing a Certificate in Social Services.

•  Working with the Commonwealth Secretariat to provide a Diploma in

Youth in Development Work.

 

•  Offering a wide range of short courses that address the needs of practitioners in human services.

 

 

Office hours – 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

The centre provides residential accommodation for 36 persons. It is built around a quadrangle and consists of: A northern two storey block (Block ‘A' with 14 double bedrooms).

 

The Western block has two lecture rooms and an office. The lecture rooms can accommodate 45 persons in any one room.

 

The Southern block (Block “B”) with 22 individual cubicles intended primarily for students/persons attending short-term courses.

 

An Eastern block with a lounge, large lecture room to house approximately eighty persons, a kitchen, storerooms and laundry area.

 

All these facilities are available for rental to public or private sector organizations or groups.

 

The centre operates a small library and computer centre within working hours.

 

 

Programmes

 

The centre coordinates the:

 

  • Four Month Course (full-time) in the Principles and Practice of Social Work annually, January to April each year;

 

  • Certificate in Social Service (CSS) full-time one year and part-time two year course. This begins in September each year.

 

  • Diploma in Youth in Development Studies is proposed to begin in 2003.

 

  • Specific tailored short courses and workshops to meet the needs of the social welfare and non-governmental organization.

 

 

Important dates

 

  • Closing date for the Four Month Course in the Principles and Practice of Social Work is October 31 each year. The course begins the second Wednesday in January and ends with a graduation ceremony the last Thursday in April each year.

 

  • Certificate in Social Service – the application is available February and closes the end of March each year.

 

  • The duration for full-time students is one year and two years for part-time.

 

  • ACSWE's Biennial Conference , Barbados , July 28-August 1, 2003.
