Women and Development Unit (WAND)
History
Established
in 1978, WAND provides a community outreach service for UWI to directly
influence women's education and women's leadership. The Unit has
contributed greatly to the articulation of the vital role of women,
community and NGO development within the Caribbean .
Core Mission
To promote and support women's development through community action,
training, research, documentation and dissemination of educational
material, developing the social consciousness of women and providing
them with the tools of empowerment.
Core Activities
• Providing training certificate programmes, courses, lectures and classes in trade union and labour education.
• Promoting research into industrial relations in the Caribbean region.
• Fostering the development of healthy industrial relations in the region.
• Organising international, regional and local conferences on Labour
Education.

This
certificate programme is a valuable educational option targeted at
industrial relations practitioners and staff. It is structured around
themes to improve knowledge and
skills in labour studies

for the Certificate include: Getting Started In Labour Studies, Labour
Economics for the Caribbean Society, Caribbean Society, Politics and
Government , Labour Law,, Trade Unionism in a Historical and
Contemporary Context, Human Resource Management for Industrial

May 1959 - Grant to conduct Labour Education survey
June 1959 - First Labour Education survey
August 1959 - - Labour Education Conference, UCWI, Mona
September 1959 - Labour Education Conference, British Guiana ( Belize )
1963 - Establishment of the TUEI. Rex Nettleford is co-opted to
the Advisory Board of the TUEI
1964 - First Regional One-Month Course & the TUEI evolves into
a regional training institute.
1970 - Continuation of worker management courses
1975 - Workers Bank & Capital Formation Courses conducted in
Jamaica & Trinidad & Tobago .
