the establishment of a Centre for Risk Reduction at a ceremony at the University of the West Indies today (27-6-2006).
The Centre of Excellence for Disaster Risk Reduction
This Centre emerged out of an initiative to mobilize the University’s expertise to assist Caribbean countries devastated by hurricanes during 2004. The goals of the Centre are
to assist Governments of the region and other sectors in policy formulation and strategic planning to reduce the effects of natural hazards on the economies and societies of the
region. The Centre will bring together staff and faculty across the University with relevant expertise and experience and will also collaborate closely with other regional and
national agencies involved in disaster mitigation activities.
