In April 2005, Vice Chancellor Prof. E. Nigel Harris established the Institutional Advancement Division (IAD) which is responsible for furthering public understanding and recognition of the University of the West Indies and its important mission as a leading teaching and research university and for developing support for the institution. It is responsible for a wide range of activities that provide the framework for building strong financial support, as well as volunteer support and lasting relationships with a variety of constituents including alumni, donors, community members, the media, parents and friends.

"To promote The University of the West Indies globally as a premier institution of higher education with leadership in areas critical to the Caribbean, to generate more philanthropic gifts from outside the region and to make alumni view the institution as a lifelong partner for professional and personal enrichment, pledging volunteer, as well as financial support.
