22HOW THE CONVERSION WORKS

We understand that students are concerned about their entire academic record and how these types of changes will impact them. To allow all stakeholders to adjust to the new changes, the transition to the 2014/2015 grading policy and conversion of the degree and cumulative GPA values will be done in three phases over the 2014/2015 academic year.

Phase 1: Conversion of Degree GPA - August 1, 2014

Due to its importance, the conversion process will begin with converting student's Degree GPA. The conversion is based on the GPA bands associated with the class of degree under the previous grading policy. In order to ensure an appropriate conversion, each band is associated with its own conversion formula, (termed "Basic Formulae 1").

Previous Grading Policy Classification
Class of Degree Band GPA Range Conversion Formula
First Class 3.6000 - 4.3000 ConvertedGPA = PreviousGPA
Upper Second 3.0000 - 3.5900 ConvertedGPA = PreviousGPA
Lower Second 2.0000 - 2.9999 ConvertedGPA = ((49 x PreviousGPA)+149.5) /99
Pass 1.0000 - 1.9999 ConvertedGPA = ((49 x PreviousGPA)+149) /99
Fail 0.0000 - .9999 ConvertedGPA = (199 x PreviousGPA) /99
2014/2015 Grading Policy Classification
Class of Degree Band GPA Range
First Class 3.6000 - 4.3099
Upper Second 3.0000 - 3.5999
Lower Second 2.5000 - 2.9999
Pass 2.0000 - 2.4999
Fail 0.0000 - 1.9999

Note: Degree GPAs that fall within the range 2.9000 to 4.3000 are converted 1:1.

Example/Illustration: For a student with a Degree GPA of 2.4250, the Lower Second conversion formula would be used and the resulting GPA would be 2.71.

The following four (4) steps details how the new GPA is achieved:

  • Step 1: Calculate Degree GPA - 29.1000 / 12.0000 = 2.4250
  • Step 2: Round-UP Degree GPA to 2 decimal points = 2.43
  • Step 3: Display Degree GPA to 4 decimal points = 2.4300
  • Step 4: Using the appropriate formula (see above), convert Degree GPA - ((49 x 2.4300) + 149.5) / 99 = 2.7128

This initial conversion will be done at the end of the 2013/2014 academic year. Beginning August 1st, 2014, all continuing students at the Cave Hill, Mona and St. Augustine Campuses will be notified of their new Degree GPA via a letter posted in their Banner account (MySecureArea). Students in the Open Campus will be notified via a letter posted in their Student Portal (My Exams).
