UWI ARCHIVES FUNCTIONS
The UWI Archives is an institutional archives containing the official papers and records of enduring value to The University of the West Indies dating back to the institution’s founding in 1948. The Archives' mandate is to provide professional and consistent management of University Archives and records, through the establishment and implementation of policies and procedures based on international standards and recognized principles and practices. In carrying out our mandate, we acquire, organize, preserve and make available for research, UWI records of enduring administrative and historical value in all formats.
Four main functions that captures the daily work of the staff of the University Archives:
WE ACQUIRE:
The University Archives receives from its partner in mission, the Campus Records Management Programme, records that have been earmarked for transfer to our custody. We visit offices and units to identify and appraise records for archival value.
WE ORGANIZE :
The University Archives uses Standards, outlined by the International Council on Archives, to organize the material in order to maintain the original context and use of the records.
WE PRESERVE:
The University Archives makes every effort to ensure that there is a physical and intellectual control over the records of enduring value, records are cleaned, maintained and stored in accordance with the appropriate physical environment based on their formats, and on designated conditions of access.
