Handover Ceremony at the Ministry of Education.

 

The Office of Administration in partnership with The UWI Press has donated 826 copies of Voices of the Pelican: Graduation Speeches by UWI Chancellor, Professor the Honorable Sir George Alleyne (2003 – 2016) to the Jamaica Library Service and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information.

On November 11, 2020, Miss Maureen Thompson, Director General of the Jamaica Library Service (JLS) and Miss Kishma Simpson, Senior Director of the Jamaica Library Service received the donation of 260 copies of Voices of the Pelican for distribution to all 120 libraries in the network. In addition, they received three complete sets of the UWI Press’ Caribbean Biography Series for prizes in the JLS’ initiatives and events. Dr. Shani Roper, Curator of The UWI Museum made the donation on behalf of the Office of Administration and The UWI Press.

At a brief handover ceremony at the Ministry’s Head Office on January 19, 2021, the Hon. Fayval Williams, Minister of Education, Youth and Information and Dr. Kasan Troupe, Acting Chief Education Officer received the donation of 566 copies of Voices of the Pelican from Dr. Roper. Minister Williams said that the books will serve as a “timeless reminder to students as they graduate, about their place in the world and the need for them to be examples.” The books will be distributed to schools with students pursuing CAPE in the subjects of Communication Studies and Caribbean Studies.

This initiative is in keeping with the mandates of the Office of Administration and The UWI Press to support the University’s commitment to advance learning and create knowledge in the Caribbean and the world at large.
