Faculty of Sport Showcases Research Excellence at Research Day 2026

Mona Campus – March 26, 2026

Academic staff within the Faculty of Sport at Mona, showcased their research contributions during Research Day 2026, highlighting scholarship that addresses critical issues in athlete health, inclusion, ethics, and sport policy across the Caribbean.

The poster presentations reflected the Faculty’s commitment to evidence‑based practice and regional relevance, with studies spanning anti‑doping education, disability and sport policy, and concussion awareness in football.

One featured study, conducted by Dr. Aldeam Facey, examined the knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to anti‑doping among Jamaican athletes and support personnel. The research provides valuable insight into the level of awareness surrounding anti‑doping regulations and underscores the importance of education in promoting clean, ethical sport.

Another poster, presented by Dr. Sharmella Roopchand Martin in collaboration with Ryan Brathwaite, explored public policy and sport for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in the Caribbean. The study critically assessed policy frameworks and their impact on access and participation in sport, emphasizing the need for inclusive approaches that support equitable opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Dr. Roopchand Martin also contributed to a third study focusing on athlete welfare, titled “Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Male Professional and Semi‑Professional Footballers Towards Concussion: A Look at Two Countries from the Caribbean Football Union.” The research examined concussion awareness and management practices among footballers, highlighting gaps in knowledge and reinforcing the importance of player education and medical oversight.

Research Day 2026 provided a platform for meaningful scholarly exchange and demonstrated the Faculty of Sport’s ongoing role in generating research that informs policy, enhances athlete safety, and supports sustainable sport development within the region.
