Taking Caribbean Sport to a Higher Level
FSP Explores Strategic Collaboration to Advance Sport Development
Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, the Honourable Phillip Watts, met this morning with representatives of The University of the West Indies (UWI) to discuss areas of potential collaboration aimed at strengthening sport development, research, and employment opportunities within the sector.
The UWI delegation included Dr. Roy McCree, Dean of the Faculty of Sport, and Dr. Anand Rampersad, Head of the Sport and Physical Education Centre.
Discussions focused on creating clearer career pathways in sport and expanding employment opportunities for graduates of UWI’s Faculty of Sport. The meeting also explored collaborative research opportunities across various dimensions of sport, including biomedical research, athlete development, sport policy, and community-based sport development programmes.
The engagement represents an important step toward harnessing academic expertise, innovation, and practical programme delivery to support the continued advancement of sport in Trinidad and Tobago.
Arising from the discussions, a committee has been identified to work closely with UWI representatives toward the development of a potential Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs and The University of the West Indies. The proposed agreement is expected to provide a framework for joint initiatives, research collaboration, capacity-building, and opportunities for students and graduates within the national sport sector.
