Launch of Trinidad leg of Community Inclusion Programme

THE UWI/CDB COMMUNITY INCLUSION PROGRAMME

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Faculty of Sport in collaboration with the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) is pleased to pilot its Community Inclusion Programme (CIP), an initiative which engages at risk youth (between the ages 11 to 16) within our fence line communities from The UWI’s St Augustine and Mona, Jamaica campuses. This programme aims to provide guidance, opportunities and lessons for youth development and the Trinidad and Tobago leg will run from April 8-17, targeting the Cane Farm Community, under the theme, Sport as Tool for Development & Peace.

CIP models an approach for gender sensitive community engagement fostering good health and well-being. This model is designed as a pilot programme of health and wellness promotions among communities engaging elite regional athletes, health practitioners, educators, trainers, counsellors and other relevant professional services toward more inclusive communities and sustainable partnerships.

The broad CIP Pilot Project objectives are listed below:

  • Unite, educate and inspire our young people in vulnerable communities through sports, music and other creative art forms.
  • Support the healthy development of our young people through strengthening and expanding sports programs in low-income communities.
  • Develop character traits such as discipline, honesty, confidence, teamwork, tolerance and respect using facilitators who are subject matter experts.
  • Facilitate positive social integration and enable social skills in our young people through team building and sporting activities.

In implementing the project, the participants will be exposed to four (4) components as follows:

COMPONENT 1 – GOALS

Participants will be taken through a series of activities allowing them to assess their current skillset, talents and interest. Once identified, techniques from a multiplicity of sports will be used to support and cement the importance of Aiming high and working towards a particular goal.

COMPONENT 2 – YOUR INDIVIDUAL JOURNEY

Participants will further explore activities/subject that they are good at and be able to identify “their race”, how fast they can go and be encouraged to “stay in their lane”. This component will rely on techniques and tips from a few sports including Track & Field.

COMPONENT 3 - EXECUTION PROCESS

Through the use of analogies from sports in particular Cricket, participants will be encouraged to put their best foot forward and to do their best at all times irrespective of the situation.

COMPONENT 4 – RESULTS & SUSTAINABILITY

Participants will be encouraged to make every effort count even in the face of obstacles. Sport techniques in particular those in Football such as shift, defend, pass, and score will be used to encourage them to push towards their goals and not be easily swayed or deterred.
