Taking Caribbean Sport to a Higher Level

In recognition of World Intellectual Property (IP) Day, observed annually on April 26, the Cave Hill Academy of Sport partnered with Business Barbados to host a timely panel discussion exploring the intersection of intellectual property and sport on April 27, 2026.
This year’s World IP Day theme, “IP and Sport: Ready, Set, Innovate,” highlighted how intellectual property rights support innovation, creativity and commercial value across the global sports industry—from branding and broadcasting to technology and athletic performance.
Among the panelists was Ms. Jaydene Thomas, Lecturer in Sport Law at the Cave Hill Academy of Sport. Ms. Thomas contributed her expertise on legal and regulatory considerations surrounding intellectual property in sport, including athlete image rights, sponsorship, licensing and sport-based innovation.
The partnership with Business Barbados underscores a shared commitment to fostering dialogue between academia, industry and the wider business community, while raising awareness of the importance of intellectual property in driving sustainable growth within sport and the creative economy.
The Faculty of Sport continues to support initiatives that connect scholarship with real-world application and advance understanding of critical issues affecting the sport sector locally, regionally and internationally.
