Terms & Conditions
1. ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP
The Cultural Studies Scholarship is intended to support a graduate student in the Institute of Caribbean Studies, The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus who demonstrates:
- Outstanding academic potential in advancing Cultural Studies as a field of inquiry; and
- Financial need.
It is one of the ways in which the Institute of Caribbean Studies, seeks to attract and reward all-round high achievers from the region’s community of graduates.
2. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
The applicant must be/have:
- A citizen of one of The UWI’s contributing countries;
- A first-time applicant of any of The UWI Mona Cultural Studies Graduate degree programme. (Applicants must not already be holders of a graduate degree.)
- Gained at least an upper second class honours degree at the undergraduate level, or demonstrate solid experience or distinguished service to any sector of the cultural and creative industries;
- Completed an associate degree from a community or state college with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.6 and have been accepted on the basis of the Maturity Clause to a Cultural Studies graduate degree;
- Completed the first year of a UWI graduate degree programme with a minimum of at least a GPA of 3.0 or equivalent)
- Verifiable financial need
3. VALUE OF SCHOLARSHIPS
- Up to J$300,000
- The award covers/contributes to the tuition, residence costs (on/off campus) and contributions to books and meals
- The Awardee may apply for other scholarships/grants and loans to cover other costs
Note: Nationals of Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago will only receive support for maintenance costs. Maintenance costs will be linked to costs listed in the relevant campus Financial Information Booklets. This information is available on each campus website.
4. DURATION OF AWARD: One or Two Semesters (depending on the cost of the programme)
5. GRANT/SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION REQUIREMENT
All applications shall be accompanied by the following documents:
- Transcript from UWI covering Year 1
- A 500-word personal essay outlining career aspirations, the reason for the choice of the degree programme, community involvement, and co-curricular activities
- Evidence of leadership positions at school, university and/or within the wider community; community involvement; and co-curricular activities.
- 2 reference letters – one of which must come from an academic referee attesting to the applicant’s academic ability and potential, demonstrated leadership qualities, and character. (Referees must have known the applicant for at least two years. All referees must affix the official stamp of their office/department/organisation).
6. SELECTION PROCESS
- The scholarship would be advertised on campus and/ or any other University media (and by any other institution named by the Donor).
- Short-listed candidates will be interviewed by a panel including personnel from The UWI, the Donor, and any other representative, as selected by the Donor.
7. HOW TO APPLY
a.Submit the completed application form with all the other relevant documents to the School for Graduate Studies and Research via email at sgsr@uwimona.edu.jm with the subject line: ‘The CULTURAL STUDIES SCHOLARSHIP’, on/before September 22, 2023.
