Mary Virtue and Mike McLaughlin,

soon to marry, undergraduates in the Faculty of Science, and

Michael Morrissey

a graduate student of Geography. They lost contact until a couple of years ago when a common interest led to a most productive collaboration. All three had grasped breadfruit as the new focus of their endeavors.

The UWI announces 2021 graduation ceremonies and honorary degrees

For their outstanding contributions to regional and international development, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) will present honorary degrees to 14 eminent persons at its 2021 graduation ceremonies.
Nominations from across The UWI’s five campuses were approved by the University Council, at its sitting on April 30, 2021. These 2021 graduands will join a list of over 450 honorary degree recipients conferred by the regional University since 1965.

UWI shares in Caribbean success at Tokyo Olympics

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is sharing in the Caribbean’s celebration of Olympic glory. UWI current students, alumni, coaches and sports medical support staff were among the Caribbean contingent at the Tokyo Games, including four athletes who collectively won two gold medals, one silver and two bronze. The UWI community proudly congratulates all the athletes and staff who represented both their countries, and the regional university by extension.

UWI Grad Wins Olympic Gold

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) congratulates alumnus, Hansle Parchment on winning gold in the men’s 110 metre hurdles at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Parchment clocked 13.05 seconds in the athletics event on August 5 to take the Olympic title. The UWI, Mona Campus alumnus now has two Olympic medals, following his bronze win at the London 2012 Olympics. He is also a silver medalist from the 2015 World Championships in Beijing.

UWI CENTRE FOR DISABILITY STUDIES PARTNERS FOR SPECIAL REGIONAL CONFERENCE

The University of the West Indies Centre for Disability Studies (UWICDS) and Office of CARICOM Special Rapporteur on Disability, with support from the Commonwealth Secretariat, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Digicel Foundation recently completed its first ever regional Special Ministerial Conference for Specific Legislation for Persons with Disabilities in the Caribbean.

The UWI congratulates alumnus the Honourable Philip J. Pierre on becoming Prime Minister of Saint Lucia

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) congratulates the Honourable Philip J. Pierre who was sworn in as Saint Lucia’s 8th Prime Minister on July 28. Prime Minister Pierre, an Economist and UWI alumnus, led his political party to win the country’s recent general election. The UWI community is filled with great pride to have yet another member of its alumni assuming the high office of Prime Minister in the Caribbean region.

Approved Taxi Operators for Mona Campus

 As part of an ongoing effort to facilitate a safe, secure system of transportation for students and staff on the Mona Campus, the Security Committee has granted permission for certain taxi operators to operate on The UWI, Mona Campus.  The names of the taxi operators have been vetted to ensure they have complied fully with the requirements of the law.
